Hair cutting tips: Using clippers

For stylists who love working with clippers, and for those who want to get better at it, Ivan Zoot has a bit of advice. Zoot is director of education and training for Andis Company, a top clippers manufacturer.

store clippers properly

First, loop up your cords when your clipper is not in use. "Dangling cords are asking for trouble," says Zoot. Looping is preferable to winding the cord around the body of the clipper, which can cause premature wear.

Never leave the clipper on a counter, where anyone sweeping or just walking by can pull it down by mistake. Rather, keep it in a drawer or hang it by the bail loops.

cut like the pro you are

While a lot of hair cutters leave the trimming for last, Zoot recommends detailing the hairline earlier in the cut. "By trimming early, you get a better look at how the finished cut is shaping up," he explains. "Use an extended index or ring finger in contact with the client to balance and control the trimmer, and switch to smaller combs when you need greater precision."

watch, learn and practice

"Mannequins aren't just for school," notes Zoot. "Continue to practice on mannequins throughout your career. Try new things. If you can cut it on a mannequin, you can cut it on anyone. Mannequins are tougher clients than humans!",/p>

Zoot also encourages new stylists to hang around a barber shop. "Watch the old guys cut hair," he suggests "The best clipper-cutting education happens when you are standing one foot over the shoulder of a great clipper-cutter."

Frequently, continuing education events include clipper classes. Says Zoot, "These classes can introduce you to new skills and concepts while reinforcing the ones you forgot that you know."
