When Jo Dunham contacted stylist Anya Goy (rainbowhaircolour.com) about getting her hair colored in rainbows, Goy knew exactly where to draw her inspiration – a pair of Katwise inspired jumperlings in Dunham’s Etsy Shop!
If you visit Goy's Instagram you will instantly gather that's she's a rainbow-haircolor extraordinaire - it's definitely her specialty! The cool thing about this Mohawk is it can be styled in numerous ways and angles. Flip through the slideshow and see.
According to Goy, Dunham’s hair was previously colored permanent black with a red streak in the front. Goy recommended that she stop coloring her hair and grow out the color. “Jo loves ‘clipper short hair’ and had shown me a few clipper hair art tattoos that she was keen to try,” says Goy.
She says that for both the cut and color she worked visually, improvising elements based on how to the style worked. “I started with the basic concept of a rainbow Mohawk and then adapted the idea as I worked. Jo was very free and easy, which gave me a lot of creative freedom to develop ideas.”
Here are Goy’s steps on how she created Dunham’s rainbow haircolor:
STEP 1: “Hair was pre-lightened/bleached to a yellow blonde, with the past permanent black hair dye on the mid-length and ends lifting to an orange, and the past red lightened to a pink.”
STEP 2: “Though the top I did double rainbows. The right side of the Mohawk went from red, orange, yellow (warm colors) at the front, finishing with green, blue, purple (cool colors) on the crown. Then the pattern was reversed on the left side of the Mohawk. This meant you could style the hair right from a warm tone fringe, and left for a cool tone fringe.”
STEP 3: “Through the back of the Mohawk I used ‘V’ shaped sections for the rainbow, so it flowed in from the shapes of the clipper design on the sides. The finally the clipped side panels were dyed freehand, fading the tones to match into the back.”
Here are Goy’s steps on how she created Dunham’s cut:
STEP 1: “This was done in two stages; before and after color. The main shape was cut in, removing a lot of the old color from the ends.”
STEP 2: “Then I did the clipper art patterns on each side. This gave me a basic shape to apply the color design to.”
STEP 3: “Once the color was finished, the final stage of cutting was done. This second stage was about cutting to the colors, removing areas to reveal more tones, blending sharp edges to make the colors melt from one to the next.”
STEP 4: “I kept the length in front, and cut the layers so the hair could be style both left and right to reveal different color patterns, or style up/quiffed (like the singer P!ink).”
