It's easy for clients to slip into a cycle of long hair; they simply stretch time getting it cut and often don't know what they want to do with it in terms of bringing the length up.
Pureology Artistic Ambassador Ruth Roche contends that this is the perfect client because you have a lot of hair to work with. Roche's young client had fine, long hair, and Roche chose a youthful, loose, medium-layered cut with hidden tricks to promote volume and movement. See steps below!
The cut
STEP 1: Start with steep, diagonal parts deep in the nape area.
STEP 2: Use long strokes with a razor to establish the length; keep edges soft and light.
STEP 3: Cut hair longer in the front than on the side and back so it sweeps over the shoulder and creates movement.
STEP 4: Dry hair with Pureology Colour Stylist Root Lift Humidity-Resistant Cream Spray Mousse to create volume at roots before texturizing and finessing the cut. It's better to do the rest of the cut on dry hair.
STEP 5: Cutting hair shorter to long in the crown will help create more lift in that area.
The finish
STEP 1: Use a curling iron to create waves on the relaxed layers. Spray Pureology Strengthening Control Zero Dulling Hairspray to a section and use a large, 1-3/4-inch curling iron to wrap only the root area.
STEP 2: At the top, brick-lay sections away from the face so it moves back and looks more natural.
STEP 3: Finger-comb through to blend. The end result will be beachy and textured.
Pro tip: For blowdrying the front to one side, "Brush hair to the opposite side that it falls on and wrap the section around a round brush, rolling hair back toward the side it will fall to," Roche says. "Hit it with heat from a dryer and let it cool. When you drop the section, it will fall to the other side. It's a really easy trick to show clients, too."
