One of our favorite personalities in the industry is Nick Stenson—we love him not just for his continued passion, inspiring beauty looks (in color, styling, texture, updos, all of it!), iconic collaborations (as VP of Salon Services and Trend at Ulta Beauty, this guy brings together some of the best in the biz!) and industry expertise, but also for his entrepreneurial, innovative ideas.
When he told us about the launch of his new Curious brush line, we couldn’t help but smile—of COURSE the busiest man in the industry is launching his own line. Of COURSE it’s totally different from any other brush we’ve ever laid eyes on. And of COURSE it’s a luxurious experience that’s a visual feast for the eyes.
“For the last three years, I’ve been working on a couple of tools that are going to be a game-changer in blowouts,” Stenson told MODERN in an exclusive interview.
Stenson developed a cushion brush and two round brushes to create an all-in-one approach to blowouts, using a combination of synthetic and natural boar bristles. “As hairdressers, we sometimes spend so much time on the cut and color, but then it falls flat in the blow out,” he says. “I wanted to create tools to make it easier for you and for your guests to create their looks at home, because they’re your walking billboard.”
The cushion brush has the most unique design. In addition to the fibers on the inside of the brush, which offer control and shine when working with thick hair, the fiber ring technology on the outside is the most interesting part of the design.
“You know when you’re blowing out thick, coarse hair and it looks beautiful but wavy at the root? It’s possible to get it perfect if spending a lot of time on blow dry,” Stenson says. “But having the fibers on the outside of the brush allows you to get right into the root and lock in the hair all the way through the ends.”

Stenson says the cushion brush is also great for detangling, the grip feels good in the hand, it’s feather-light, and easy to clean.
“Another favorite feature of the cushion brush is I’m very big on detailing, and I usually do it with a hair pin, but this is perfect for dress work, using the edge of the brush to move curls into place, for teasing the root and for polishing.”
The round brush has the same technology, and is perfect, Stenson says, for waving out the hair.
“When you blow dry and twist, this configuration will give you highs and lows,” he says. “On fine hair, you’ll be able to see the cuticle expand as you’re blow drying so the hair looks thicker, or you can stretch out a curl and twist i t as you go down for a different effect.
