Celebrity stylist Marc Mena created actor Lily Gladstone's braided chignon for the 2024 Golden Globes--see how he executed this elegant look.

Lily Gladstone's braided chignon for the 2024 Golden Globes was created by Marc Mena using Great Lengths Tapes.
For Sunday's 2024 Golden Globes, celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena styled the first Indigenous woman to receive a Golden Globe nominee for Best Performance for Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone, using Great Lengths extensions to create a beautiful braided chignon. Gladstone looked perfect as she accepted her historic win in the category.
“When people think of wearing hair extensions, they think that you can’t wear your hair up with them," explains Mena. "But with the right extensions, like Great Lengths’ GL Tapes, and the correct application, you can. With Great Lengths extensions, I can send Lily on the red carpet for one of Hollywood’s biggest nights and feel confident that nothing is going to come out and know that my job is going to last throughout the night.”
See below for the breakdown on how Mena achieved this elegant style.
Marc began by blowing out Lily’s clean, wet hair using a large round brush to create volume.
Once the hair was blown out, he applied the extensions beginning at the back of her head, about an inch and a half above the nape, and proceeded to create a diamond formation, spreading out higher as he got to the top of her head.
He then used thinning sheers to thin the ends out, giving a more natural look.
After that, Marc resprayed the hair extensions with a little water and re-blow dried it, marrying her natural hair with the hair extensions.
He then took her hair into 3 sections – 2 in the front that went from ear to ear and the back of her hair, where he created a higher ponytail – and secured with an elastic.
He pulled the left side and brushed the hair in an upward motion, securing with an elastic into the ponytail.
He then sectioned out a front piece of her hair to create more softness in the face.
Marc then took the other section into the ponytail and applied hairspray before creating the chignon.
All of the hair that was remaining gave length and volume, which he used to create braids (12 in total), giving a nod to Gladstone's Indigenous culture.
The braids were split in three sections, sprayed and secured with elastics.
He then separated the braids with his fingers and crisscrossed them over the chignon and secured, creating a chignon braid.
