Students at Minnesota School of Cosmetology are influenced by the latest runway looks each season to create hair, makeup and nail trends for their clients. For prom season 2015, MSC students, staff and instructors say popular styles include pastel colors, loose, wavy hair and natural-looking makeup with bold accents.
Long beach waves and loose updos are popular right now. Lower-placed buns are also a classic look that is back in style.
“The long, natural wave look can be achieved through extensions and loose curls using a 2- to 2 ½-inch curling iron,” says Donna Dungy, instructor at Minnesota School of Cosmetology. “For a sleek low bun, part hair down the center and create two ponytails, one in each hand. Tie hair into a loose knot. Wrap one side around to the right and stick a hair pin in to hold. Repeat on the left side and hold with a pin, and finish off with hairspray to hold the look all night.”
For prom makeup, it’s all about accentuating the details while keeping the rest low-key. Very natural eye makeup is in with big lashes and a bold lip, and pastels are also coming back.
“Pastel-colored eye shadow can be used on the outer rims of the eyes as an eyeliner,” says Dungy. “For a more dramatic look, false eyelashes can create extra volume and length, and red or a darker shade of lipstick can help pull the entire look together.”
Pastels like soft pinks and nudes are also on trend for nail polish colors, along with metallic and 3D embellishments. Stripes and other graphics, including negative space, are also in style for prom this year.
“Negative space can be created by letting the naked nail show in a design that contrasts with polish,” explains Dungy. “Something sure to draw attention to anyone’s prom look is to add gems and jewels to the nails to give them that 3D aspect.”
