First-time nominees Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews take home the Oscar for Best Make-up and Hairstyling got the Dallas Buyer's Club.

And the Oscar for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling goes to… Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews.
Upon accepting their Oscar, first-time nominees Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews, thanked the stars of “The Dallas Buyer’s Club," Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey, “for letting us transform and torture you.”
Mathews, the lead make-up artist on the film, said she was given a meager budget of $250 for the AIDS drama. Her transformation of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto into increasingly ill, skeletal characters was hauntingly understated yet powerful.
In a recent interview, Mathews described her work on the film, “I just lined the (makeup) trailer walls with skulls and skeletons, and after I paled them out with a certain products, I would highlight and contour, look at the pictures of skulls and skeletons to accentuate it,” she said. “The veins were an extra trick to make them look very sick. That was a lot of work, and it paid off.”
In addition to her Oscar win, Mathews’ craftsmanship and artistry received top honors for best period and/or character makeup at the 2014 Makeup Artist and Hair Stylists Guild last month.

Mathews shares the Oscar with the film’s lead hair stylist Adruitha Lee. The celebrity stylist has worked with the likes of Angelina Jolie and has an extensive list of Hollywood films under her belt, including her work on “12 Years A Slave,” who brought home Best Picture last night.
"Hairstyling can finish off a character or help make the character. You know it is so important to get the right thing and for the actor to feel right,” Lee said in an interview with IndiaTV. “If they are comfortable and they like what they see, that helps them deliver a better performance. It completes the character as it's the frame for the face.”
Although they were up against some intense competition, including “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” and “The Lone Ranger,” Lee’s and Mathews’ win is a true testament of how the proper make-up application and hair styling, no matter how minuscule, can make a huge statement and complete a character’s look. Way to go ladies!
