Among the unique services for hair loss offered at Detour are two scalp treatments that help balance the scalp and create the best possible environment for healthy hair growth. Here’s a closer look.

When you add thinning hair treatments to your menu, you elevate your status as a hair loss expert while pampering your client and increasing revenue. And you can do these treatments in 30 minutes or less.

At Detour Salon and Style near Indianapolis, IN, owner J.B. Shelton and her team are known as the thinning hair specialists in their area. “I offer Bosley products and services, I teach classes for Bosley, I do videos and Facebook Lives on their products,” J.B. says. “We are known as the Bosley salon in our county. We’ve created a niche as hair loss experts in our community with the products and services to back it up. It’s a growing opportunity. My 19-year-old nephew is losing his hair!”
Among the unique services for hair loss offered at Detour are two scalp treatments that help balance the scalp and create the best possible environment for healthy hair growth. Here’s a closer look.
BOSLEY PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH SCALP MICRO-DERMABRASION TREATMENT
What it is: A natural exfoliating treatment, performed at the shampoo bowl.
What it does: Lifts dead skin cells; controls ingrown hair; manages psoriasis, dandruff and cradle cap; treats thick scalps with sebaceous bumps; creates a healthy “canvas” for hair regrowth strategies by keeping scalp tissue free of debris, oil, buildup and dead cells. “This treatment is good for a variety of scalp issues,” says J.B. “It’s a great precursor for clients trying to regrow hair due to genetic, medical or stress-related causes. It’s great to use seasonally. It’s good for people who use dry shampoos frequently. I even use it on thick hair that’s compact on the scalp and inhibits oxygenation. It unclogs follicles to encourage new hair growth.”
What’s in it: The proprietary LifeXtend Complex contains pentapeptides to strengthen and fortify hair; apple stem cells that create an optimal environment for hair growth and marine algae which nourishes and fights the DHT that inhibits hair growth. It also contains key ingredients like diatomaceous earth, a gentle natural exfoliator; sugar cane and sugar maple extract—both natural glycolic acid/alpha hydroxyacid that dissolve oils and break-up thick skin build-up; sweet almond extract, a gentle, natural exfoliator that imparts sheen; lemon extract, a natural vitamin C with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and orange and green tea extract to soothe sensitive scalps.
How it’s done: Step one is application of the Bosley Professional Strength Bos-Renew Scalp Microdermabrasion. Mix Step 1 and Step 2 in a bowl and apply with a scalp brush, massage, process five to 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water, ensuring all granules are removed from the hair and scalp. Cleanse with a Bosley Professional Strength shampoo selected for your client’s hair. Apply a few pumps of Bosley Pro Rebalancing & Finishing Treatment, a nutrient packed formula rich in vitamins and antioxidants to help moisturize, reduce inflammation and fortify the hair and scalp.
Massage the Rebalancing & Finishing Treatment into the scalp, wrap the hair in a hot towel and process for 1-2 minutes. Rinse and apply Bosley Professional Strength Healthy Hair Moisture Mask. Rinse and style the hair.
How often: J.B. says the treatment cannot be done any more frequently than every 28 days, and color must be applied 14 days before or after the treatment. “Most people do it once a quarter,” she notes, “because it’s so powerful.”
What it costs: The cost should reflect pricing in your market; at Detour the treatment is $35 and often added to a haircut or blowout. “In some markets, salons can get up to $50,” J.B. notes.
NEW! BOSLEY PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH REJUVENATING SCALP SCRUB
What it is: A gentle cleansing, moisturizing and balancing treatment for optimal scalp and hair health.
What it does: Supports scalp health by gently removing debris and build-up on the scalp and hair; energizes and rebalances the scalp; enhances absorption of Bosley Professional Strength treatments.
What’s in it: Bamboo charcoal to help remove debris and purify scalp and hair; sunflower seed oil to soothe and moisturize; rosemary leaf extract to provide iron, calcium, phytonutrients and anti-oxidants; tea tree leaf oil to soothe dry or itchy scalp and orange, tangerine and lime oil which are all high in free radical protection.
How it’s done: Wet the hair; part with fingers to expose scalp; run nozzle along exposed scalp areas to dispense. Massage into scalp, adding more water as needed to create a lather. Exfoliating particles will naturally dissolve. Rinse thoroughly and apply Bosley Professional Strength Healthy Hair Moisture Masque to strands. If the hair has not been shampooed for several days, mix Bosley Professional Strength Bos Defense or Bos Revive Nourishing Shampoo for an added cleanse.
How often: J.B. performs the treatment in the salon, then sends the client home with the remainder of the bottle for weekly applications. “I recommend applying the scrub after every five to seven shampoos,” says J.B. “It’s also great to use between extension applications. It removes all those dry, dead skin cells. And it’s safe to use on the same day as a color service.”
What it costs: At Detour, the five- to 10-minute service is $25. J.B. estimates the salon performs between five and 10 scalp services total per week.
“With any treatment,” comments J.B., “a great consultation makes all the difference. It’s important to clarify your client’s goals for their hair, as well as the time and money they want to invest in attaining those goals. If you can help a client grow their hair back, they will never leave you. And remember, if your guest doesn’t have hair, you don’t have a job!”
