It’s common for hair color formulations to be adjusted based on the season. In spring/summer, shades get lighter, dustier. In fall/winter, finishes get a little more jewel-toned. But the common denominator, says Nick Pagano, Goldwell national artistic team member and co-owner of i.d Salon in New York, is change.

Using inspiration from Goldwell’s D!srupt trend that uses play with light reflections, Pagano’s tone-on-tone finishes create illusions and contouring.

“Just because my clients want pastels and vibrants, and yours might not, that doesn’t mean these images don’t matter to you because it’s the technique that is the most important thing,” Pagano says. “Adjust the color to what works for your client’s lifestyle or taste level. Ditch the purple and imagine it’s a beautiful brown-on-brown with two tones and a little auburn. Change up the color and these looks become salon friendly.”
