Colorists frequently ask Eva Scrivo, the “queen” of balayage, salon owner and founder of the Eva Scrivo Academy, why she prefers balayage to foil highlights. Here she shares the top five reasons why every colorist should include balayage in his or her tool box of techniques:
Balayage allows you to customize each haircut with color and design a specific look for your clients by using a bespoke placement of highlights and low lights.
Balayage offers the freedom to place lightener exactly where you want, without having to tease, tone or blur any lines of demarcation created by foiling.
Painting allows you to book a haircut or another color service while your balayage client processes, sometimes more difficult when using foils, especially with heat. There is less running back and forth to check on her and having to rinse different areas of the head.
You can overlap lightener in previously bleached hair without breakage.
You can take a traditional foil client and make it much more interesting with wider panels and ribbons of hand painted blonde highlights, without the risk of damaging the quality of the clients hair.
Scrivo runs the Eva Scrivo Academy where balayage is always at the top of the training. The next class will be all about the differences between balayage and foil highlighting and will be held next Monday (Sept. 17, 2018) in her New York City salon in the Flat Iron District on 5th Avenue (there are just a few spots left!)
