For independent beauty and wellness professionals, a salon suite is their second home, so how it looks and feels, what it communicates, is determined by their salon design choices.
Whether it's a hairstylist showing off their collection of vintage concert posters, or a barber creating a sports-themed retreat, maybe a nail artist who does tarot card readings, or a massage therapist designing a "take me away" calming sanctuary, a salon suite offers the freedom to build a space that reflects the business owner's personality, passions, and brand.

That freedom can be exciting, but it also comes with challenges. How do you fit everything you need into a limited footprint? Which design choices create the biggest impact? How do you make a space feel uniquely yours without overwhelming clients or sacrificing functionality?
From hairstylists and barbers to estheticians, massage therapists, and tattoo artists, Megan Communale works with professionals who are redefining what it means to create a client experience through space and design.

We asked Megan Communale, marketing director of My Salon Suite, one of the nation's leading salon suite franchise brands, to share what she's learned from touring suites across the country. She has seen how entrepreneurs transform their suites into highly personalized environments that reflect their brands and specialties.
Design a Salon Suite You'll Love Coming to Every Day
MODERN SALON:What are some of the biggest design mistakes (challenges) you see new suite owners make, and how can they avoid them?
MEGAN COMMUNALE: A common design challenge I see actually stems from the suite owner's excitement and their desire to fill their space with everything they love! When a beauty, health or wellness professional finally gets their own keys to their dream space at My Salon Suite, the immediate urge is to fill it with everything that displays their vibe—every sign, pillow, decorative piece they've had on their vision board since they started dreaming of being an entrepreneur. And while we love to see that enthusiasm, in a suite, it's important to remember that decorative freedom is just as important as physical freedom, and having room for both the professional and the client to feel comfortable, not cluttered, should also be a focus.
How to avoid it: Treat the suite like the intentional space that it is. Instead of five small pieces of wall art, invest in one large, stunning statement piece. Keep surfaces clear and choose hidden or built-in storage to maintain a clean, high-end aesthetic.
Ultimately though, the suite is the business owner's space and we just love to see it filled with their personality!

Design Before You Buy
Minerva Beauty has added 3D and augmented reality features to minervabeauty.com, giving salon, spa, and barbershop professionals a new way to shop for furnishings and equipment.
• The tools allow users to test different configurations, colors, and finish options in real time.
• The 3D catalog currently includes most styling chair models and shampoo systems, with more styling stations being added.
• The feature is designed to help professionals make more confident equipment decisions before investing in furniture for their suite, salon, spa, or barbershop.
MS:What are your best tips for maximizing a suite's footprint?
MC: When you're decorating and designing in a suite, every single square inch has to earn its keep. You maximize space by looking up and thinking flexibility.
• Go Vertical: Install floating shelves and wall-mounted cabinets all the way to the ceiling. This keeps your floor clear, which naturally makes the room feel bigger and more airy. At My Salon Suite, our spaces come furnished with the foundational pieces that a business owner needs, making it very easy to add in those extra pieces of storage around what is already provided.
• Multifunctional Furniture: Look for pieces that double as color-mixing counters or feature hidden drawers.
• Wheels are Your Friend: Use a high-quality mobile salon trolley or cart for your immediate tools. When you need more room to move during a blowout or a detailed application, you can easily roll it into a corner out of the way.
• Virtually Expand with E-Commerce: Maximize your footprint by setting up an online affiliate storefront or a digital retail shop linked directly to your booking system. This allows you to carry just one or two "tester" bottles of your favorite products for clients to smell and try in the chair, while empowering them to buy the full size online. It gives you an infinite product catalog and endless revenue potential without taking up a single square foot of physical storage space.

MS:What questions should a beauty, health or wellness professional ask themselves to help define the vibe or atmosphere they want their suite to convey?
MC: Before buying paint or decor, the suite owner needs to align their design with their brand strategy. One of the resources that we provide at My Salon Suite is our "Build Your Brand in 5 Days" exercise. This thought-provoking, hands-on resource gives the owner all of the questions to ask themselves, as well as inspiration and activities to build their own brand and vision. Some of those questions include:
• "How do I want my clients to feel the second they step across the threshold?" (Energized and trendy? Calm and deeply relaxed? Indulged and pampered?)
• "Who is my ideal target client, and what environments do they already hang out in?" (If your target clients love high-end boutique hotels, your suite should reflect that type of experience as well.)

MS:How can suite owners create a memorable experience for clients through design, even if they have a limited budget?
MC: Design isn't just visual; a memorable experience hits all five senses, and sensory touches are incredibly budget-friendly.
• Lighting over Luxury: You don't necessarily need a $1,000 chandelier, unless you want one! Instead, invest in LED mirrors or ring lights. Flattering lighting makes the client feel beautiful and ensures your after-photos look stunning on Instagram.
• The "Sensory" Factor: A signature ambient scent and diffuser, a curated playlist, and a sleek, inexpensive beverage station offering infused water or espresso instantly elevates the vibe.
• The Accent Wall: Many of our My Salon Suite locations offer to paint the suite as part of the move-in package. Another option is to use a bold, peel-and-stick textured wallpaper or a rich, moody paint color on just one focal wall behind your styling chair. It creates immediate depth and doubles as a perfect photo backdrop.
MS: What design trends are you seeing right now in salon suites, and which trends do you think have staying power?
MC: Right now, organic shapes, soft edges, and grounded, earth-inspired palettes—like sage greens, warm taupes, and camel—are trending. Suite owners want textures that feel comforting, like wood paneling and matte finishes. This type of decor also provides a zen-like experience for both the owner and the clients—and who doesn't want to be in a space like that all day long?
I see this trend as having staying power because clients increasingly view hair, skin, nails, and other beauty appointments as acts of mental wellness and self-care, so suites that feel like calm, organic mini-retreats always win.

MS:Can you share an example of a salon suite you've seen that perfectly captured the owner's personality and brand? What made it so effective?
MC: I recently had the pleasure of touring our My Salon Suite location in Erie, Pennsylvania, and a suite that stood out to me was designed by its owner, Lauren (@beautybookmarkaesthetics), who captured the "Vintage Academic" or "Dark Academia" brand story. This suite is a masterclass in using theme to create a highly curated, memorable experience. What made it so effective to me:
• Immersion Through Theme: Instead of the typical sleek minimalism, this suite fully committed to a cozy, nostalgic narrative. A deep forest green accent wall provides immediate moody depth, set against the warmth of rich wood flooring and furniture. A large bookshelf filled with vintage hardcover classics is the focal point, complete with thoughtful details like an antique clock and ornate brass teapots.
This isn't just a salon suite; it feels like stepping into a private, historic study.
• Integrating Product & Experience: The retail strategy is brilliantly integrated. Instead of modern display racks, premium haircare lines like Sorella are nestled among the books and on a warm wooden side table. It reframes retail as part of the "library curator's choice."
• The "Sensory" Vibe: A round, ornate patterned rug and a soft, fringed side-table lamp create tangible texture and warmth that contrast perfectly with the high-end, functional styling chair and massive vanity mirror. It balances the functional lighting needed for technical work with ambient light that enhances the mood.
