1920’s, Paris, New York, Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, Dali, Schiaparelli—these were the people, places and times that inspired the 2012 Carlton Hair Awards for Excellence. The theme was Café Society and it was reflected in the hair, makeup, fashion, choreography, music and overall composition of the competing salon team’s entries. A distinguished judging panel and event sponsors Goldwell and Bumble and bumble contributed their expertise, valuable prizes and support. It was a high-style celebration of hairdressing, creativity and collaboration.
The hostess for the evening, Rosela Testa, Carlton Hair District Leader, described how the theme is usually a collaborative effort but this year, James O’Regan, President of Carlton Hair, guided the decision.
“In the spring while James was in New York with National Artistic Director, Damon Footer, doing a photo shoot, they attended an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.”Impossible conversations" was a concept created during the Cafe Society era by Miguel Covarrubias for Vanity Fair. The theme became a way of connecting our hairdressers to have "impossible conversations" of their own with their greatest influence. Some had literal interpretations, some had drunk conversations and others took this moment to create a modern imaginative collaboration with their historical mentor. It was very exciting to see the stylists manifest what they would create if they could spend one week with the likes of Dali or Schiaparelli. “
The event was attended by over 1800 guests including Carlton Hair and Regis Salons staff, media, local cosmetology students and industry partners The event also served as a fundraiser to benefit The Arthritis Foundation.
Premier salon teams from over 25 Carlton Hair locations competed against one another for top honors and were judged by Stephen Moody , Global Education & Academy Dean for Wella Salon Professionals; Howard McLaren, Creative Consultant at Bumble and bumble; Dimitrios Tsioumas, Artistic Director of Goldwell; and Damon Footer, National Artistic Director for Carlton Hair & Regis Corporation.
