Vidal Sassoon changed the world for the professional hairdresser forever. Born in London in 1928, Sassoon single handedly transformed an industry. Before Sassoon, clients had “standing” appointments where they would come in once a week for "a shampoo and roller set."

Sassoon decided to change all that in the 1960s. It was his idea that women should get a fantastic, wash-and-wear cut that needed refreshing every six weeks. He created simple, geometric looks that made life easier for the client and certainly more interesting for the professional. It was Sassoon who stressed that hairdressing is a craft and a profession. Because of Sassoon, you are more of an artist, can make more money and have happier clients.

We lost Sassoon at the age of 84 on May 9, 2012, but his impact will be felt forever. In addition to launching design, he launched careers, products, tools and so much more. We all owe so much to Vidal Sassoon.

For #FlashBackFriday, we are sharing some of the iconic Vidal Sassoon images from his heyday in the '60s and '70s. These are the most famous of his thousands of finishes from that era. It is worth it to dig around and find more.

If you get a chance, check out the film Vidal Sassoon, The Movie to learn more about his life and impact on the world, not just our industry.

In Dubai, Clients Visit the Salon Every Week. Here’s What That Market Can Teach You

In Dubai, a salon visit isn’t an appointment. It’s a weekly routine, and clients can spend $800 to $1,400 a month on it, according to Gaurav Tripathi of MADI International. On October 6-8, 2026, the market behind those numbers opens its doors as Beautyworld Dubai marks its 30th edition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together distributors, brands, stylists and salon owners from all over the world.
