Rit Lon

, a Master Stylist at the Ted Gibson Salon in Washington, DC, doesn't leave his talent in the salon when he packs up at the end of the day. Rit puts his shears down and picks up his pencil to spend his off hours creating "Hairicatures", caricatures of hairdressers!

"It all started on facebook," says Rit. "All my friends were sending me gifts like puppies and hearts. I kind of took it to another level and started doing cartoon drawings of THEM. It was just a fun application, but now it has grown into a little side business."

That side business has resulted in some sales. "I've have sold some pictures in the past and have been commissioned to do portraits. I also have made a logo for PR@Partners. It was a cartoon lady of a woman carrying a shopping bag out of the store with a bag full of products. I also made characters for a book cover called "Whats your Diet Type".  Most recently he has been charging $250 per character, but is offering discounts for group "portraits".

It takes Rit about 2 – 3 hours for one hairicature. . Instead of just recreating an image from a photo, Rit learns more about his "subject" after reading picture profiles in order to study the personal and habits. "Then I draw the character in pencil, scan it and then colorize it on the computer." Rit does not yet have a website, but he can be reached on facebook.

When asked if he has a favorite, Rit says he just can't. "They all make me smile."
