Every other day, a starlet is going from blonde to brunette to strawberry blonde…and back again. While some celebrities relish changing their color as often as they change their outfit, plenty of our favorite stars are well known for their glamorous signature hair color—so much so that their color has become a mainstay of their look.
What makes certain hair color look so great? Celebrity stylist and FHI Heat VisionMaker Neeko says it’s all about knowing what works with your client’s skin tone. A NAHA winner and owner of Salon Sessions in Pasadena, California, Neeko says you can’t miss with “soft, flattering colors.” One of his clients, Halle Berry, is a good example of this: “If you look at Halle's gorgeous skin tone and hair length, classic is the way to go,” he explains. “The most she should stray from her natural shade—if she does at all—is two levels lighter and add soft tone-on-tone highlights in a softer brown.”
Neeko, who uses the L’Oréal Majirel line, also emphasizes the importance of knowing your product line like the back of your hand. "Certain color lines pull stronger undertones than others," he explains. Ultimately, the more familiar you are with the line used in your salon, the better you'll be able to control your results. And as for whose hair color is best? See all of Neeko's picks for best color below!
