Just 29 degrees outside, but the stars were shining big time both in and out of our New York studio Monday night. It’s Orlando Pita who stopped by our W. 14th space to show us why he makes the big, big, BIG bucks.
Of course you’ve heard his name by now. He is the first stylist in NY to command $800 for a cut and style at his meatpacking district salon. He is the number one requested artist for top fashion designers and he commutes internationally for shows, magazine shoots, commercials, videos, you know…the whole ball of wax. In fact, we started our shoot at 7:30 p.m. because he was coming from a full day of doing a cover for Japanese Vogue.
To say it was a great shoot would be to diminish the power and importance of our session together. Because it was a style only shoot, we invited Orlando to select his own model and then asked him to do what he felt would be “right” for her and for the cover of a winter issue. His talent is truly magical. He used assorted lotions and potions as well as various tools to get the most out of model Helena’s very long and very straight hair. I don’t want to give too much away, but he made her hair VERY big with lots of interesting texture. You’ll have to wait until February to see how he did it!
Just a couple of interesting things:
-Drives a Porsche SUV to accommodate all the stuff he needs for shoots.
-uses 4 suitcases filled with hair stuff for shoots (hence the SUV).
-can, and often does, get $10,000 a day for a full day booking.
-born in Cuba, raised in West New York, New Jersey.
-has done 12 Madonna videos.
-wore blue jeans and a black sweater (so did the rest of us)!
-first haircut performed was on his brother at age 14. It was a disaster.
-brother has forgiven him…….

In Dubai, a salon visit isn’t an appointment. It’s a weekly routine, and clients can spend $800 to $1,400 a month on it, according to Gaurav Tripathi of MADI International. On October 6-8, 2026, the market behind those numbers opens its doors as Beautyworld Dubai marks its 30th edition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together distributors, brands, stylists and salon owners from all over the world.
