It was trend that started to pick up steam over the summer and now as we make our way into fall, redheads are hot! Just look at some of the celebs that walked the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards, redheads all: Rihanna, Evan Rachel Woods, Emma Stone, Florence Welch, Hayley Williams, and Nicki Minaj. "Those that wanted to stand out at the VMA's went red," says Patrick McIvor, celebrity colorist and Artistic Director for Matrix.

Why is the trend so hot right now? "Historically, the best way to get and stay busy during bad economic times is to stand out from the crowd and make sure you are remembered," says McIvor. "Last weekend was a clear example of that with all the redheads, complemented by the unnatural, bright hair colors worn by Lady Gaga, Will.i.am and Katy Perry. Maybe this years MTV awards can teach us that sometimes color is about just having fun."

Here's a look at some of the best reds from the night.

Rihanna
Fire engine red was the prefect shade for RiRi's fiery performance with Eminem. She wore her locks long with a crystal-studded head band. Her duet came in the second part of Eminem's show-stopping opening featuring his two current hits, Not Afraid and Love the Way You Lie.

Hayley Williams
Hayley Williams, from the band Paramore, is no stranger to playing with color, including a variety of blondes and reds. Her latest shade is two-toned, with a deep orange-red on top and orange-yellow layers underneath. For her performance, she wore a simple knot updo with straight fringe above the brows.

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood
As one of the VMA presenters this year, True Blood co-star Evan Rachel Wood aimed for Old Hollywood classic beauty. Her dark red hair was styled with a deep side part and long rippling waves tucked behind the ear on one side. The rock and roll came with black eyeliner, over-the-knee black boots and her asymmetrical dark dress.

Florence Welch
Florence Welch, of Florence + the Machine, rocked a deep red shade similar to Wood's, in addition to black cat-eye liner and black dress. Her red carpet updo featured waves pinned up at the back of her head and a heavy fringe above the brows. During her performance though, she literally let her hair down, with red curls streaming behind her.
