Rodney Cutler, owner of the Cutler Salons in NYC and Miami, recently hired renowned colorist David Stanko to join his empire at his 57th Street salon.

When Rodney asked about what it's like for a top colorist with a large following to make a change, David said "When it comes time to change, you know it. But before you make a move, you need to explore other salons to look for the right fit. Stop in and visit as many salons as possible. See how you are greeted or better yet, schedule your own appointment to get a chance to be a quiet observer. Does that culture work with YOUR personality? Above and beyond the work, you must be comfortable where you end up."

Rodney agrees. "For both of you, you must ask: 'Is it the right energy?'. Remember, you are interviewing each other."

Once that change is made, David adds that "You know you've made the right choice if you are excited to pick out your outfit before going to work."

After discussing the whole "changing" process, Rodney and David ended up chatting about sharing clients and formulations. This debate proved to be very interesting from both an owner and stylist perspective. Is the new colorist obligated to do exactly what the vacationing colorist would do? Rodney and David disagree.

Check out this interview and see where you stand. It sparks interesting conversation.....
