Joico International Artistic Director Damien Carney hosted a VIP gathering for Joico salons and special guests at Kohler Academy recently. The Kohler Academy is beautiful and brilliantly run by Jill Kohler and her team,” comments Damien. “It’s a bright and happy environment, which is so important for the students who are learning the profession, and for guests.”

Damien dazzled the students with his talent, presenting two hair cut demonstrations and two finished models during his presentation. “One of the cuts was firmly based on strong, foundational technique, and one was more ‘free-form,'" he says. "I felt it was important to demonstrate both so that they could see that it was important to perfect your technique, and also important to allow yourself to be free-spirited and creative.”
During the course of the session, he advised students to develop strong foundations—technically, emotionally, physically and business-wise--and to commit to a lifetime of pursuing education, both in and out of the classroom. “When you leave a great place like the Kohler Academy, you have a great foundation. Find a salon that will help you build on that foundation with continuing education. It should also be a place that demands your very best—that will give you the drive and discipline to grow and excel.”
Later, at the VIP event, more than 100 guests gathered to tour the Kohler Academy, network with Damien and with colleagues and enjoy refreshments. For this group, Damien presented four finished models and a hands-on hair cut.
