Spring's Natural Blonde Upgrades

At Boston’s James Joseph Salon, director of education Michelle Lee says spring will bring natural blonde upgrades: shiny shades with punched-up tonality that come from playing in different levels.

“Overall, color has more sparkle and shine; using a gloss treatment like Cellophanes from Sebastian is key.”

While Lee predicts some rose-gold and icy blondes, she favors beige-blonde color boosts, created with lightener and varying volumes of developer. For subtle depth changes, she places foils on angles and uses a freeform placement pattern that mimics the rounds or fans around the top. Also, diffusing color into the root will continue to be key.

After freeform highlights, tone the hair with Wella Koleston 10/03, then gloss with Sebastian Cellophanes: two parts Pearl Blonde, one part Honey Blonde.

Root-diffused highlights come from Wella Blondor Lightener for lighter highlights and Chromastics Lightener for buttery ones. Cellophanes Gloss Pearl Blonde goes over the top.
