MODERN SALON: These services can stand on their own or be incorporated into a larger appointment. Can you give an example of which services would be great add-ons and ticket boosters?

CARLY ZANONI: Some of my favorite add-on services are the ones that create a noticeable impact without adding significant time to the appointment. Face-frame brightening using BlondMe 9+ is a great example because clients immediately see the difference around their face, but it doesn't require the time commitment of a full highlighting service. Quick glossing services are another favorite because they instantly improve shine, tone, and overall hair appearance.

I also love tonal refreshes and treatment-based add-ons. Services like a CHROMA ID tone-and-treat allow clients to leave with hair that not only looks refreshed but feels healthier as well. These types of services are easy to incorporate into an existing appointment, enhance the overall result, and create additional revenue opportunities without dramatically extending service time.

BRENDNETTA ASHLEY: The best add-ons are services that solve a problem, enhance the final result, and improve the client experience. When positioned correctly, they feel less like an upsell and more like a personalized recommendation. For example, a client coming in for highlights could easily add a bond-building treatment, gloss, haircut, and customized take-home regimen, turning a standard color appointment into a premium service experience while delivering better long-term results. Here are a few examples:

     • Bond-building treatments during color services to help strengthen and protect the hair.

  • Deep conditioning or moisture treatments, especially for curly, coily, or chemically treated hair.
  • Glosses and toners to refresh color, boost shine, and extend the life of a color service. This also includes color depositing mask.
  • Express color, T-zone, using 10minute color to touch up the hairline and where they part their hair for grey coverage.
  • Scalp treatments that address dryness, buildup, or scalp health concerns.
  • Haircuts and curl shaping added to a color appointment for a complete transformation.
  • Extension maintenance or extension add-ons for clients looking to add fullness or length.
  • Take-home retail recommendations such as color-safe shampoos, bond repair products, or curl-enhancing products that support the service at home

MS: We know that during some tough economic times, clients start to stretch the time between appointments. Do you see these services as a way to keep clients "close" when the tendency may be to extend time between appointments?

CARLY ZANONI: Absolutely. In my experience, clients are often looking for ways to maintain their look while being mindful of both their budget and their schedule. Smaller maintenance services can help bridge the gap between major appointments and keep clients feeling confident in their hair.

For example, a gloss, face-frame refresh, or quick root touch-up can extend the life of a larger color service while still giving the client something new and noticeable. These appointments provide an opportunity to stay connected with clients, maintain the relationship, and continue delivering value without requiring them to commit to a full transformation every visit.

I also think these services contribute to a better overall client experience because they offer flexibility. Not every guest needs a 3 hour appointment every time they come in. Sometimes they simply want a refresh, and offering strategic maintenance services allows us to meet clients where they are while still helping them look and feel their best.

BRENDNETTA ASHLEY: Absolutely. During times when clients are extending the time between major appointments, maintenance and express services become incredibly valuable. They keep clients connected to the salon, help preserve the health and appearance of their hair, and provide an affordable way to maintain their look. It’s a win-win. The client gets continued support, and the salon maintains engagement until they’re ready for their next larger service!
