Curls don’t just blithely barrel through the seasons without a care—they’re sensitive to changes in temperatures and atmospheric conditions. That’s why, says Ouidad Master Artistic Educator Chadwick Pendley, @chadwickpendley, it’s essential to understand various climates and how they affect curls.
Humidity vs Aridity or Damp vs Dry
What it really comes down to, regardless of where you live, is dryness vs humidity. If you’re living in a four-season climate, that could translate into hot and humid summers vs dry-as-a-bone, cold winters. If you’re in the Southeastern or Southern U.S., you’re probably dealing with humidity most of the year. And if you’re in the West or Southwestern U.S., humidity isn’t much of a factor at all, but dry air will affect your clients’ curls.
“If the weather is highly humid and hot,” says Chadwick, “curls tend to frizz. But I don’t necessarily view this as a negative. In fact, people who move to a humid climate may discover curl patterns they didn’t even know they had! Conversely, people who move from a humid to dry climate might lose their usual curl pattern.”
Even a natural texture can benefit from some frizz control in extremely humid conditions, however, and in those cases Chadwick turns to Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel. The best-seller features the company’s Anti-Frizz Nano Technology with a protein derived from silk. It seals the cuticle to keep essential moisture in and humidity out. “My tip,” says Chadwick, “is to apply the gel immediately after the shower, or after shampooing and conditioning the hair in the salon. I guarantee it will prevent frizz for several days.”
Thirsty curls are another challenge. Lack of humidity can actually cause curls to go limp. “In the winter, when it’s likely to be dry and cold, curls will require moisture and hydration,” says Chadwick. “Primers and leave-in conditioners are absolute musts and will help to encourage those curls.” Among his go-tos are Ouidad Ultra-Nourishing Intense Hydrating Mask, which is rich in essential oils, and Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner, a primer that creates a balanced moisture foundation before styling which enables curls to respond better to styling products.
Regardless of where you live, it’s important to help your clients understand the impact of the environment and seasonal changes on their curls. “These are valuable pieces of information that can help resolve their curl issues,” says Chadwick.
