Pastels were popular haircolor shades in both the winter and summer months of 2015 – and they won’t be going away anytime soon. With Rose Quartz and Serenity named Pantone Color of the Year shades for 2016, pastels will remain a top hair color trend but take on a new direction. Kate Reid, director of education, Color.Me by Kevin.Murphy, shows off how pastels can be given an avant-garde look with the combination of precious metal-inspired shades. Punk platinum combined with edgy-yet-feminine rose quartz delivers a cool, modern result.

GET THE LOOK: PUNK PLATINUM
Use a clean, clear blonde in a light, neutral, sandy tone with a soft multi-tonal gloss. The color should have dimension, created by using multiple shades of blonde in naturally placed foils, similar to a babylights technique. The pastel shades should sit a bit heavier and be applied sparingly so the end result is seamless rather than stripe-y and a little more wearable. This technique also pairs well with texture and the cut of the year – the shag.
COLOR: Color.Me by Kevin.Murphy
1. HL101 + 12% to New Growth
2. Foil out areas visually using 30g 11.2 + 3g 5.8 for a rose quartz color and alternate with silver toner to create ice blonde.
3. Apply Natural Toner to refine global color.
4. Develop and apply Finishing Regime.
STYLING:
1. Detox the hair with Maxi.Wash and Hydrate.Me Wash & Rinse
2. Towel dry.
3. Apply Anit.Gravity to the hair, concentrating on mid-lengths and ends for extra heat protection.
4. Blow dry and smooth with large round brush.
5. Pull out a fine sections of hair around the face and weave onto a pin.
6. Apply heat from the dryer then allow to cool.
7. With a large tong, apply a bend in the hair away from the face.
8. Brush through hair, including fringe section, to create texture difference in this area.
9. Apply Powder.Puff in root area down to nose for loose volume and turn head up for extra body.
10. Apply Session.Spray to finish.

GET THE LOOK: EDGY ROSE QUARTZ
Inspired by fashion, and the mixing of silver and gold jewelry, the mixed metal trend bends the rules on color. Instead of sticking to one metallic shade family, this trend embraces a fusion of rose golds, pewter, silver and 14k gold hues for a soft, fresh, perfectly balanced and blended finish.
Use an intense jewel-inspired pastel shade with a cool, muted edgy tone using a mix of blonde foils to keep it commercial and on-trend, yet feminine and wearable.
COLOR: Color.Me by Kevin.Murphy
1. Apply silver shades in a slice placed on an angle to create heavy color through the front sections of the head. Due to the shade being so soft, if it’s not placed in a heavy manner, it won’t be seen.
2. Take a diamond section on the top of the head. Foil out blonde foils on all edges of the diamond.
4. Apply soft but intense rose quartz shade through the diamond section in a solid form.
5. Develop and apply Finishing Regime.
STYLING:
1. Detox the hair with Maxi.Wash and Hydrate.Me Wash & Rinse.
2. Towel dry.
3. Apply Anti.Gravity to the hair then apply Young.Again to the hair for smoothness and repair.
4. Blow dry and smooth with large round brush.
5. Brush through hair, including fringe section, to smooth the hair without flattening it.
6. Apply Powder.Puff in root area down to nose for loose volume and turn head up for extra body.
7. Apply Session.Spray to finish.
8. For extra shine, apply Shimmer.Shine.
