Pravana’s Show Us Your Vivids photo competition called for stylists to unleash their creativity and make a color statement—through intense, bright, color-popping styles using Pravana’s Vivids color. Skye Bryand, of Absolut Hair in Everett, Washington, won for her Circular Distortion—a combination of blues, pinks and pops of yellow—and received an editorial photo shoot with MODERN SALON where she would be mentored by competition judge and Shear Genius 3 winner Brig Van Osten.
Bryand knew she wanted to push herself to her creative limits for her winning editorial shoot and who better to mentor her than the imaginative Van Osten? The result blends the futuristic feel of The Fifth Element, the vibe of the trend-setting elite of The Hunger Games, and the edge of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
After learning she had won the contest, Bryand began to experiment with hair wefts to help conceptualize the look she would create for her MODERN SALON shoot. “I’m not much of a planner,” she says, “but I knew I had to be fl exible with a professional model. I came up with the finished vision once I selected my model. I wanted her face but understood she wouldn’t allow me to color her naturally pale blonde hair. This allowed me—okay forced me—to be more creative.”
While Van Osten was present to offer guidance and direction, Bryand just loved having her nearby. “Skye was incredibly calm about the shoot,” says Van Osten. “Not only does she have very little session experience, but this was her first time in New York! She was prepared, professional and let her creativity run wild. One of my favorite set moments was when she handed me her tray of pins to hold. She really had a strong vision and the best help I could be was to fall to her side and hold her pins!”
That “extra hand” from Van Osten was needed as Bryand created forms on the head and prepared her hand-painted, precolored wefts creating what Bryand dubbed “color pattern squares.”
“I placed the wefts on round softballsize structures to soften. You don’t have to use forms when you have the right hair and tools,” says Bryand.
As we wrapped up, it was Van Osten who offered the most beautiful parting words: “Judging the Show Us Your Vivids contest was extremely hard. There was so much passion in everyone’s work. However, as with any competition, there is only one first place and Skye deserved it. She has a bright career at her footsteps. I look forward to seeing her shine on.”
