CHI artist Julian Macias touches up Miss Universe 2017's braided bun before her crowning moment.
The Event: Ninety-two women from around the world competed in the 66th annual Miss Universe pageant, held at The Axis at Planet Hollywood Hotel in Las Vegas. With more contestants than ever came an array of beautiful beauty looks, including a variety of hair textures, colors and lengths.
The Details: As the official hair care sponsor for more than 10 years, Farouk Systems, Inc., the maker of BioSilk, CHI, and Esquire Grooming, celebrated the long-standing sponsorship of the Miss Universe competition. Eighteen Farouk Systems Global Artists, including leading artists Tammy Mixon, Albert Luiz, Patrick Kalle and Lorena Garcia, were backstage helping the women’s vision of their competing look come to life.
“Miss Universe is important for us to be a part of because each area, each country, each region has different things they do with their hair,” says Scott Emery, Farouk Systems, Inc. president of international sales. “What we’re showing with these products is their total versatility. They’re able to be used on all hair types and textures, and you can be artistic and creative with them. Miss Universe proves these products work across the world.”
Founder and Chairman of Farouk Systems Dr. Farouk Shami was one of the judges for this year’s competition.
“As someone who has been in the business for decades, I have really enjoyed seeing the progression of what beauty means to women," Shami says. "I look forward to our involvement in the Miss Universe Competition every year because I’m always impressed at how well these women truly embody the diversity of the countries they are representing and redefining what we know as global beauty.”
The Winning Look: This year’s winning contestant, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, Miss South Africa, sported an elegant braided bun.
Below, see how CHI artist Julian Macias created this glam upstyle.
GET THE LOOK:
STEP 1: Apply CHI 44 Iron Guard to dry hair, then using the new CHI Lava Flat Iron, take diagonal sections and create soft beach waves.
STEP 2: Put hair into a high ponytail and use a doughnut shape hair filler. Pass ponytail through the center of the filler and secure with bobby pins.
STEP 3: Cover up the filler using a CHI Backcomb Brush, secure with bobby pins and spray with Farouk Royal Treatment Ultimate Control Hairspray. You will have remaining hair at the midshaft and ends.
STEP 4: Create a three-strands braid with the remaining hair and secure around the bun, pulling some strands off the braid to add texture.
STEP 5: Spray Farouk Royal Treatment Rapid Shine all over for a glossy finish.
The tool of choice to create the various looks was CHI’s newest innovation, the CHI Lava Iron. With the CHI Lava Iron, the artists were able to create every look from bouncy curls to beach waves and sleek updos. Sourced from volcanic lava combined with the power of CHI ceramic, the iron creates smooth, sleek results.
