GOING ROGUE: From Summer Brunette To Winter Blonde

Ashlie Marmo (@ashytones) of Posh Color Studio, Easton, PA, has been seeing a lot of clients looking to add depth for the winter season, “But not this girl!” Marmo says. “Last time she was in my chair, we went brunette for the summer. Today she was looking to add blonde back in but keep it rooty for low maintenance.” Marmo’s “go-to” technique when going from dark to light in one session is brightening with teasylights. “I love how blended the hair looks and the lift I get from doing this.”

PRO NOTE: “I take each section and hold that section with my thumb and index finger. I then weave the hair at the bottom close to where my fingers are holding the hair together to create an ‘organic tease’ in the hair without actually having to tease! I then separate the top from the bottom and take that top section and add in one small tease towards the root area to insure I will have a seamless blend. I place that hair on a CooBoard which is one of my favorite tools to use while doing teasylights because it keeps the little hairs and tease out of the way so you can paint the section of hair you intend to paint. Plus, you can get even close to the root with this board! It is a game changer for me.”

Here Marmo shares the details for this fresh winter blonde:

STEP 1: Blend Joico Blonde Life with 20 volume developer and Brazilian Bond Builder for added protection. Utilizing the PRO NOTE from above, start the teasylights in the back at the hairline.

STEP 2: At the front (money piece) take a triangle section and apply back to back babylights. At the top point of the triangle, tease the hair to create a softer transition between the money piece and rest of the hair.

STEP 3: Check foils regularly and once processed, pull each one out and blend with hands making sure the hair is saturated. Rinse thoroughly allowing the other sections to process more if needed. Shampoo with Joico Blonde Life Brightening Shampoo. Towel dry.

STEP 4: Root tap just the money piece with Redken Shades EQ 6na and 7na. Then go back in again with Redken Shades EQ 9v, 9gb, 9nb and Clear to tone the rest of the hair. Process for 10 minutes. “I love adding 9gb in my blonde formulas because it gives the blonde a buttery hue without being too warm.”
