How to Blend a Harsh Foil Line Using a Root Melt

When we think of jaw-dropping, swoon-worthy balayage, we think of Ellie Toia. Not only does this color queen from Austin, Texas, incorporate the tecnhique into her Instagram handle (xoxo_balayage), but a simple scroll through her portfoilo will give you shiny, beautiful results—some waved, some tied half up in a knot and some with playful braids. It's no wonder we named her as one of our Gamechangers for the 2019 Modern Salon 100.
Recently, Toia took to Instagram to share her tips on blending a client's grownout color with seamless results. In the video, Toia uses Schwarzkopf Professional's first multidimensional permanent hair color line, tbh—true, beautiful, honest for its natural "woke up like this" results.
“I absolutely love the consistency and coverage of the tbh line for a rootmelt and tone,” Toia says. “It leaves hair with the look of natural highlights. It’s so nice to just be able to add the tone softener when I want it to be a demi. Plus, the shine is unreal.”
The line was inspired by the natural beauty, no-makeup “makeup” trend. The 26 shades are designed to illuminate hair’s natural highlights and lowlights and create shimmering powdery tones. The formula contains naturally derived grapeseed oil and has up to 50% less ammonia versus the Igora Royal line. Each shade works with Schwarzkopf’s Igora developer and can be used with the line-specific tone softener to refresh mid-lengths and ends without any perceivable color shift. The resultis color with the longevity of a permanent and the lived-in look of a demi.
Get the Look:
Toia created a root tap, root shadow and root melt all using Schwarzkopf tbh—true, beautiful, honest: 7-06N/8-51C/8-19C with 10 vol and tone softener in zone 1.
She melted that together with 10-19C/8-51C tbh with 10 vol and tone softener in zones 2 and 3.
She let everything process for 20 minutes.
She then did a root tap in the very front first inch, a shadow root on the top and a root melt underneath until she reached the crown.
