Chadwick Pendley shares his six tips for clients - between salon visits - to keep their hair frizz-free with curl perfection.

Ouidad's Chadwick Pendley keeps curls in tip top shape.
CHADWICK PENDLEY (chadpendley5),Ouidad Master Artistic Educator and curl master, is passionate about curls and waves. He has an exclusively textured clientele in his Ouidad Salon By Chadwick and Igor, Fort Lauderdale, Florida salon.
Nothing makes Pendley happier than to run in to a client outside the salon and see her with her beautiful curls intact, knowing she has taken his advice and product direction. “When it comes to curls, no matter the type, there are some quick, easy and effective tips that will help your clients produce beautifully styled curls and maintain them between salon visits.”
MODERN checked in with Pendley to learn how he advises his clients to keep their curls in tip top shape and frizz-free between salon visits. Here he shares his top six:
TIP 1: Tell your clients to start in the shower to ensure frizz-free curls. Advise them to shampoo no more than twice a week. In between each wash day, remind them to shampoo the scalp as this is where all the dirt and debris and sebum stay trapped. (For shampoo days, Pendley recommends Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo and in-between: Clean Sweep Moisturizing Dry Shampoo.)
TIP 2: Frizz prevention begins during shampooing, so it is very important you teach clients to take the time and massage conditioner into every curl until they feel the texture of their curls become soft and with slip. Curls readily and easily lose moisture daily, so regular conditioning is very important.
TIP 3: Immediately after the shampoo, clients should apply a primer from the mid-shaft down toward the ends. Again, they should make certain to massage the product into the hair. Teach clients their ends require more attention as they are often more porous and need extra hydration. (Pendley prefers Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-in Conditioner.)
TIP 4: Immediately after priming hair, while the curls are still dripping wet, advise clients to apply an even distribution of a styling product. Teach them to begin the application at the roots and smooth downward toward the ends. This not only ensures even distribution, but it also helps to smooth and close the cuticle which results in soft shiny frizz-free curls. (Pendley prefers the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream.)
TIP 5: Once curls have completely dried, advise they soften any cast that was created by the polymers in styling products. A dry oil (Pendley uses Revive & Shine Rejuvenating Dry Oil Mist) should be misted all over the curls and then smoothed down over a gathered ponytail of curls. This will break the cast and help to open the curls. The results will be softer curls that retain their definition.
TIP 6: If your clients want to create a massive head of curls that command attention, apply volumizing texture spray (Pendley uses Going Up! Volumizing Texture Spray.) Advise them to spray onto the scalp area and massage in to produce expanded curls.
