Mona Baltazar (@themonacut), is a hairstylist and colorist in New York City and is, for lack of a better word, a master at enhancing textured hair to look its absolute best.

In a recent conversation MODERN SALON had with a group of hair cutters, each one individually, and unaided, mentioned Baltazar as an inspiring “must follow” hair cutter.

Although we’ve been featuring Baltazar for years, and featured her throughout our content both online and in our magazines, we hadn’t combed through her Instagram in some time and we’re SO glad we did.

Her recent “Portrait Series” showcases stunning imagery of her clientele, holding onto photos of their former selves, prior to Baltazar working her magic.

Her captions showcase her clients’ hair history. Example: “Amber came in with long hair and thought her curls were healthy. I explained that she had some damage and needed to cut off some and then patiently grow out….”.

This campaign shines a spotlight on big chops, transitions, and really embracing and enhancing texture and curl patterns that can look their best with a true professional’s touch.

Baltazar explains that many women with textured hair have experienced salon horror stories, like chemicals without permission or accidentally burning hair due to inexperience,

“Rediscovering your natural hair is a powerful thing,” Baltazar says. “It also takes courage.”

She says the intention of the series is to honor her clients that have been with her for some time. “I wanted to inspire others to show that texture is beautiful.”
