Gray coverage. It’s the biggest hair color earner for most colorists, but it’s often viewed as little more than a joyless, mundane service that simply has to be done. Let’s be honest—you don’t always feel compelled to inspire your regular gray clients with exciting techniques or the latest trend. (Raise your hand if you’ve pre-mixed your client’s gray coverage formula before she even walked in the door!) You count on your gray coverage clients for reliable business, yet many stylists don’t even re-consult with these clients every few visits to ensure they are happy with their hair.
Well it’s time to take a fresh approach to gray coverage, according to Redken Brand Ambassador Daniel Mora @danielmbeauty of Pasadena, California. “Gray coverage doesn’t have to be boring,” he explains. “Keep in mind that the majority of clients don’t return because they don’t like your work—it’s because they’re bored and looking for something new and exciting. And that includes your gray coverage clients.”

Mora refers to blondes as “floating money” because you never know when they’re going to see you next. But gray clients come in like clockwork. Here, see how Mora inspires three gray clients to rethink their coverage and love their hair!
Real clients, real gray coverage stories.
Consultation is critical, Mora says. “Even if it’s just gray coverage, the consultation is as important as the application itself,” he says. “So is the product you choose.” Mora’s gray coverage go-to is Redken Cover Fusion. “It gives me 100% coverage, natural dimension that softens the appearance of the regrowth and built-in tone. One of the worst things to me is seeing someone with opaque, matte gray coverage that makes the hair look dull and dead. I feel like Cover Fusion gives you the light reflection you need to make the hair look bouncy and shiny.”
See how Mora uses his consultation skills, his creativity and Redken Cover Fusion to spark joy in three gray coverage clients.
