Nick Penna, owner and lead stylist at SalonCapri in Boston, has some suggestions for clients who want to transition their style into a new season.

HOW-TO: Fall Celeb Looks for ClientsFor clients who embraced the pixie and want to go a little longer for fall and winter, Penna likes the elongated pixie, similar to the style sported by Cameron Diaz at the Los Angeles premiere of her film, What to Expect When You’re Expecting at Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

Nick recommends using a protein-rich shampoo to add strength and shine. Before blow drying, he runs a volumizer through the client’s hair using his fingers. Nick blows out the hair with a round brush, beginning at the back of the head where the hair is dampest and works toward the front, taking small sections.   The key to achieving this look is all in how it is styled. Nick trims extra layers into the hair as it is growing out so the client can accentuate the angles of the cut when blow drying. After drying, he finishes the style with a weightless hair spray for definition and light hold.

HOW-TO: Fall Celeb Looks for ClientsKim Kardashian wore an elegant braided bun when she was seen near Lincoln Center in New York during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Nick recommends this look for day or evening as a more formal take on the casual braids of summer.

Start by applying conditioner after shampooing. This will help comb any tangles out of damp hair without pulling or knotting. Towel dry the hair and add a shape paste or gel to keep hair in place as you begin the style. Use a paddle brush to smooth the hair and pull strands into a tight pony tail and secure, being careful to include any loose strands.  Work the pony tail into a simple braid and secure. Coil the braided pony tail around the base to form a bun and secure with bobby-pins placed at ½ inch intervals. Use your favorite strong hold working spray to finish the look and keep it sleek and shiny.
