DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION: All Hands on Deck

This makeover was a collaborative effort done by three artists from the Butterfly Loft Salon and Spa (@butterflyloftsalon) in Los Angeles.

The three stylists: Caroline Guiney (@caroline_anythingbutbasic), Breanna Little (@breanna_anythingbutbasic) and Melanie Prescott (@melanie_anythingbutbasic) were moved when they saw the two-toned, choppy layered look posted by a woman (in the before shot) that she received at a local salon. "She indicated that she didn’t have the money to get it fixed," says David Thurston, Butterfly owner. "Caroline just had a last minute cancelation, and rather than just kill time, she told the person to come in. Caroline solicited the help of her fellow stylists Breanna and Melanie, and the three of them took hours out of their day to rescue her hair, free-of-charge."

STRATEGY: The client’s main priority was to save the length. The artists decided that a solid color would take the focus away from the blunt cuts and that some extensions would be needed to give it a better blend.

Step 1: To fill the hair, the artists blended mixture of 2 ounces of Redken Shades 7C and 2 ounces of Shades processing solution. The color was applied all over the hair in 1/2 inch sections. After 30 minutes of processing, the color was rinsed with cool water and dried completely.

Step 2: Then they painted all over with one part PRAVANA 7CC and 1 1/2 parts 10 volume developer. This was processed at room temperature for 35 minutes, followed by a shampoo and conditioning treatment with Number 4 Reconstructing Masque for 10 minutes.

Step 3: The artists decided bangs were called for to soften some of the harsh lines. The hair was then dried.

Step 4: Extensions were pulled out and colored. The artists used the lightest blonde HotHeads hair extensions, which they colored with one part PRAVANA 7CC and 1.5 parts 10 volume developer. The extensions processed at room temperature for 35 minutes and were rinsed with cool water and conditioned. After the extensions were dried, they were placed near the top of her head, on the sides where the hair had been cut the shortest to soften the harsh, blunt cut.

Step 5: Together the artists decided to give her a shag haircut, with a goal toward texturizing and blending the layers.

Hair rescue complete.
