Did you know that for every hair on your body there is a corresponding skin pore? And, did you know that the average adult has around 5 million hairs on their body? Pores are all over the body, so it’s important to understand how they work.

That leads to our question for you – do you have a client that is suffering from enlarged pores? For beautiful make-up application, it's important to start with healthy and cared-for skin -- and enlarged pores won't help the situation. According to beautifulonraw.com, while it’s commonly accepted that pore size is genetically determined, several other factors may contribute to this common skin dilemma. Help your clients figure out why they have enlarged pores:

  • “Hormone imbalance can result in excessive oil production which contributes to enlarged pores.”

  • “As skin ages and loses collagen, pores become larger and trap more dead skin cells along with oils which plug and stretch the pores even more.”

  • “Sun damage can also factor into pores becoming more visible.”

According to WebMD, you can reduce pore size in a number of ways. Recommend products that contain zinc or magnesium to help restore skin’s oil balance and to prevent pore stretching. Retinol or salicylic acid can also help improve skin’s texture. Choose products with the label “noncomedogenic.”

This may seem like a no-brainer, but proper cleansing of the face and exfoliating 2-3 times per week can temporarily reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. Proper face washing can help eliminate oil build-up.

Also, since sun damage is believed to contribute to enlarged pores, wearing sunscreen can help.
