Whitney Elizabeth, (@HairArtisan916) owner of Whitney Elizabeth Hair Artistry in Sacramento, CA., says, "This new client of mine found me via Instagram and Yelp. She had previously never been colored before and had just gone to another salon for a balayage highlights on her natural coarse curly level 2-3 hair. She ended up with a full-on ombre with an undesirable golden hue, resulting in tons of damage. My guest was seeking a level 8 sandy bronde balayage peekaboos...more of a sunkissed look." Elizabeth decided to "attack" by doing a full lowlight balayage to get closer to her natural color on the ombre, while leaving out some of the blonde to be toned after.
Here Elizabeth shares the how to:
STEP 1: To the lowlights, apply Schwarzkopf Igora 4,0 20g and 3,0 25g with 10 volume. Evenly saturate in back to back sections. Process for 45 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with Kevin Murphy products. Towel dry.
STEP 2: Tone the isolated blonde pieces. "They were uneven in lightness between 9 in some places that were extra porous to 7 that were still thick and course and holding tons of copper pigment." To the level 7, apply Redken Shades EQ gloss 6B "to cancel out as much of the copper as possible". Fill the 8 and 9 strands with 7GB and 9GI with clear "to smooth out any of the ash from sticking to my lighter pieces. The concoction worked out exactly how I had hoped it would. I put it on in sections leaving the very ends of hair for last." Process for 8 minutes then massage the toner through to the ends for 2 minutes. Rinse.
STEP 3: Shampoo and condition with Kevin Murphy and towel dry the hair. Apply Kevin Murphy Smooth Again all over the hair and round brush with a medium size boar bristle brush to smooth out her curls and add shine. Dry cut with long round layers and then curl with a 1 1/2 inch barrel iron.
