Men want to be in and out of the salon as quickly as possible, explains Redken’s 2010 Retail Product Guide. So, it’s no surprise that a consultation with male clients may be a little different than with female clients. Redken’s steps to follow:

Client Comfort Make him feel at ease and comfortable in your chair. If you don’t have a separate men’s area, try to make some provisions for the male client, such as men’s magazines and neutral décor.

Physical and Lifestyle Analysis Check the abundance, texture and condition of his hair and chat about his job, interests and hobbies to see how this will effect your choice of tools and products. Be upfront about the results, time and money associated with any service.

Services and Continued Care Discuss and demonstrate product usage and suggest take-home care. Once a man understands what a product can do for him and how to use it, he will more than likely make a purchase. Recommend hair care and styling products, put them in his hand and explain how to use them to keep his hair looking great after he leaves the salon.

Set a date! Re-booking, which is reserving the client’s next appointment before they leave the salon, has a powerful impact on client retention and your income. It’s also the best way to ensure your client fits his style maintenance conveniently into his schedule.
