May 3-4, 2014 at Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona, was the spring American Association of Cosmetology School (AACS) Conference and the first every student qualifying round for Battle of the Strands hair competition.
Students from four area cosmetology schools entered five teams for the preliminary rounds for the chance at participating in the final rounds of Battle of the Strands student competition in Las Vegas, October 2014.
The theme was West Meets Avant Garde, and teams competed and were judged on hair, make-up, nails and fashion. There was a range of out-of-the-box styling from Corn Flakes body art to crocheted hair molded into a desert rose. D'Image Beauty College Avondale, D'Image Beauty College Phoenix, First Class Demeanor (Avalon School of Cosmetology, Phoenix Campus), Team Edge (The Studio Academy of Beauty) and Team Zephyrus (Avalon School of Cosmetology, Mesa Campus) all competed.
Judges chose First Class Demeanor, led by Kristopher Johnson, and Team Edge, led by Celina Garcia, to move forward in the competition in Las Vegas, and attendees and exhibitors chose Zephyrus, led by Adrian Manzo, to advance as well.
