A group of salon professionals toured the City of Hope campus during the recent ISSE Long Beach event.
A group of beauty professionals attending PBA’s ISSE Long Beach in Long Beach, CA, took time to supplement their technical education with an inspirational tour of the nearby City of Hope campus. Among the group was industry philanthropist Harlan Kirschner, named recipient of this year’s City of Hope Spirit of Life Award to be presented July 12 at a special “Celebrating Cures” event.
The 50 salon pros met patients in the Positive Image Center, where cost-free services and programs are available to patients of all ages hoping to minimize the cosmetic side effects of illness or medical treatment. At lunch, new City of Hope President and CEO Robert Stone shared his memories of the compassionate care his uncle received at City of Hope during his battle with cancer. The day concluded with a special guest speaker, Hannah Komai, who three years ago was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancer of the bone. Now 23 and in remission, she is studying to be a pediatric oncology nurse.
“One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime,” says Harlan Kirschner, who founded The Kirschner Group. “Odds are someone you know or love will be affected by cancer. Don’t you want to be a part of finding their cure?” For information about becoming a “Celebrating Cures” sponsor, purchasing tickets or making donations, visit cityofhope.org/salon/sol or contact Kathleen P.
