Working as a colorist, you probably come across clients with different hair types and textures every day. The tricky part is when your client comes in and their hair includes all different sizes and types of texture – not just one.
Celebrity Colorist Marie Ferro, owner of Marie’s Color Studio in Malibu, CA, says that she’s getting more and more clients with “multicultural” backgrounds come in — her most recent example was with model, Ally.
“Ally is a mixture of different cultures, Mexican, German and Irish,” she says. “As a colorist you must determine what’s best for your client based upon their skin tone and hair type. Sometimes people with multicultural hair have all different hair textures on their head!”
Ally came in with brassy, reddish tones and bleached ends (an old ombre) that made her hair look damaged and unhealthy. Ferro decided that she needed to color balance the hair and remove the unwanted brassy tones. She decided to blend warm and cool tones into the same mixtures to create a perfect balance.
The result? A beautiful, soft brunette!
HERE’S THE FORMULA:
Using: Goldwell Topchic
Formula 1: Base color 40mls 6BG + 40mls 6MB + 80 mls 10 volume peroxide
Formula 2: 40mls 7BG + 40mls 7MB + 80mls 20 volume peroxide
Formula 3: 20mls Blonding Cream Ash + 40mls 40 volume peroxide
Formula 4: Goldwell Elumen Clear 60mls +10 mL SV@10
“I applied Formula 1 to her base, then alternated Formulas 1, 2 and 3 in back-to-back foils varying the sizes of the hair woven with in the foils for a natural effect,” she says. “After shampooing, I towel-dried her hair and applied Formula 4 all over.”
