How to Build a Sustainable Beauty Career Without Burning Out
LifeSpa leader Ali Yanez explains why strong mentorship, predictable income, meaningful recognition and the right work environment help beauty professionals build careers that last.
A new indie association and an Ohio salon offer options for independent contractors who want to rent a booth in a truly professional environment.

"For many stylists, becoming an independent contractor is the first step toward leaving the industry altogether," says Nuccio Basilisco. "We don't want that to happen!" To help indies in both hair and nails continue to enjoy the business, Basilisco and co-owner Jay Contrucci have opened Due Amicci Elite Salons and the Beauty Store in Canton, Ohio, and also have launched the Professional Independent Stylist Association (PISA).
Independent contractors who join PISA can purchase health and life insurance at discounted rates, take advantage of payroll services, see savings on supply costs and take courses to earn continuing education hours. Those who contract with the new salon will be able to "enjoy their independence while growing through education and camaraderie in a professional environment," according to Basilisco. Their one-year lease includes a signing bonus in tools and educational materials.
The 3,400-square-foot salon features 11 styling stations and three nail tables and a private pedicure room with two thrones. There's also a private hair coloring area and lots of storage space.
The "Beauty Store" part of the business stocks all major hair care brands, OPI nail care products and the Joey skin care line. PISA members and Due Amicci Elite Salon professionals as well as clients can purchase products at a discount there. In addition, Beauty Store customers receive incentives to try services at the salon.
Says Contrucci, "The bottom line is that we want to give indies an option to help them grow professionally and financially and to give them a place to work that cares about them."
