When we think of vibrant color specialists killing the game, Gerilyn Ghaisarzadeh is one of the first to come to mind. With more than 20 years of experience, Ghaisarzadeh has made a name for herself as both an artist and salon owner. Her work, which features gorgeous dimension in fashion colors, quickly caught the eyes of MODERN editors and in 2018, she was named part of our 100 gamechangers.
Since then, Ghaisarzadeh has grown her following from 2,000 to 35,000 followers on Instagram, has been featured in several issues of MODERN (including an exlusive invite to our Influencer Series), and has become a trusted source for color.
Recently, Ghaisarzadeh had us swooning over a beautiful combination of red and blue she had posted to her page during our Playing with Blue contest. Naturally, we had to find out the formula. Ghaisarzadeh not only shared it with us, but also posted a video that gives a behind-the-scenes look into her application and technique.

To create the look, Ghaisarzadeh reached for Goldwell's new Elumen Play collection. The hair color system is an expansion of the brand’s nonoxidative and ammonia-free direct dyes that launched in 2001. The new additions deliver creative, semipermanent color and a care collection to support color between salon visits.
There are eight bold, shades and four pastels, all of which are true to tone and can be customized with Clear to pastelize and Jet Black for a more smokey finish. The other shades include: Sunny Yellow, Juicy Orange, Fiery Red, Hot Pink, Mysterious Violet, Ocean Blue, Tropical Green, Blush Coral, Bashful Rose, Sweet Lavender, and Cool Mint. When changing color, Elumen Play Eraser is designed to remove the current shade.
Ghaisarzadeh's Formula and Tips:
Starting point for Goldwells Elumen pallet was level 11 blonde using silk lift and 20. "She lifted beautifully so I did not tone," Ghaisarzadeh says. "Starting a tad above the occipital bone from ear to ear I used ocean blue root to end."
"Then the sides on a diagonal from the temple to connect with the back. Painted with ocean blue also."
"Next panel is a horseshoe all the way around melting the ocean blue into fiery red alternating with fiery red and clear."
"Top Mohawk section was ocean blue melted into ocean blue and a tad of clear. This is my dimensional vivid and I love how all the colors work together to blend and give movement. The color faded tone on tone. It’s so exciting to see that unconventional vivid colors are being embraced more and that companies are realizing the market and need."
