MODERN asked Paul Barry, owner of Junior Style Stars how a student or new professional can spice up the look of their mannequin head entries. See his answer...

Barrister Junior Style stars gives future hair stylists a platform to develop their artistic skills. Unlike other competitions that require a live model, this competition requires you to create a memorable style on a mannequin.
Q.As mannequins can sometimes look a bit drab/doll-like, what are some techniques (like make-up and fashion) that you can use to make it look its best so it’s not just about the hair?
A: “When competing on a mannequin I believe the key is to start with the best mannequin you can afford,” says Paul Barry, owner of Junior Style Stars. “We at Junior Style Stars have partnered with Pivot Point this year to allow our competitors to have a quality mannequin as a starting point. Our mannequins have shoulders which lend to a more ‘human’ look and allows for clothing, drapery or neck jewelry. Our competition requires competitors color the hair which gives the competitors opportunity to change the entire look of the mannequin, right down to the make-up. Mannequins can be enhanced with lots of different make-up, jewelry and hair accessories to create and overall look. As with any style, mannequin or live model, a stylist strives to create an overall look that is most appropriate for the occasion.”
