From the Ask the Experts section in June MODERN 2013. Why should a colorist get outside their comfort zone and enter a photo shoot competition using a brand they may be unfamiliar with? Deb Gavin from Keratin Complex offers her advice, with reference to the Keratin Complex Photo Contest.

The Keratin Complex Photo Contest is a competition that's all about creating a powerful before and after image showcasing the beautiful color achievable through Keratin Complex color.
Q: Why should a colorist get outside of their comfort zone and enter a photo shoot competition using a brand they may be unfamiliar with?
A: “After many years of teaching and using another line I was not searching for something new,” says Deb Gavin, international Keratin Complex Color Therapy international artistic director. “The opportunity to try Keratin Complex Color Therapy came to me and having an open mind I decided to give it a try. I was blown away by the results. The shine, vibrancy, durability and even uptake were unlike anything I had ever experienced, and with such ease. Shortly thereafter I was asked to do the color work for the first image campaign. Armed with the Keratin Complex Color Wheel, a mock up of shade choices and 100 mL tubes that were not in final production I embraced the project.
“It was freeing as an artist to get back to a place where the same fear of change is exactly the same excitement of change. Fear of trying something new and excitement of trying something new are parallel. Channel the fear and focus on the excitement, and I guarantee your artistry and creativity will be ignited. The experience I had brought me back to the place of being a true artist. Color Therapy is so easy to use and so predictable I find myself spending less time having to think about advanced formulation and multiple steps. I have more time to focus on being creative.”
