Floating Foils - Best Technique To Get Bright Balayage Results

Jo Blackwell uses her "Floating Foils" technique to create dimensional balayage results.

Do you love the look of balayage, but want to give your client something brighter?

You CAN get that beautiful balayage dimension, but add the brightness offered by foil by doing the “Floating Foils” technique created by color expert and L’Oreal Professionnel International Platform Artist Jo Blackwell. Owner of the Dop Dop Salon in the Soho area of New York City, Blackwell has mastered the art of creating a balayage result by painting in foils. “I love the results I get with this technique,” Blackwell says. “It offers more control and better lift than traditional balayage. You are painting, but painting within foils.”

In this VERY informative video, Blackwell demos how she creates stenciled foils and how she uses different patterns of color placement throughout the hair. If you are in to highlighting, this video is for you!

FLOATING FOILS NOTES:

-At the hairline, where most clients want to see a bit more of a pop, place the color on the diagonal leaving a shadow just behind to make the highlight appear stronger.

-Using foils in this way you can create weaved highlights, babylights, slices, “A-line” highlights or classic balayage points.

-Blackwell’s preferred color choice for highlights: L’Oreal Professionnel Discover Blond Studio 9 Lightener, enriched with Olicare Complex (blended with 30 volume developer) for nine levels of lift with results visible in 10 minutes.

-One color brush is used at different angles to create different effects to create full coverage, 50% coverage or feathering.

-Fold foils in thirds to prevent overlap and to secure.

-Leave a veil along the top or at the crown for a better blend.

-Tone and condition at the same time cocktailing L’Oreal Professionnel Series Expert Power Mix with blue and violet additives to knock out any warmth.
