John Paul DeJoria, CEO and co-owner of John Paul Mitchell Systems, was recently honored by Intercoiffure North America for his charitable contributions. He answers: "We are very active in charitable endeavors. Paul Mitchell Schools have a fundraiser that every student participates in, including cut-a-thons and car washes. The goal is to raise money to donate to the community, state, nation and worldwide. It's part of our culture. It is our motto: Success unshared is failure. All Paul Mitchell students learn that it is important to do or give something without reward or return.

"We should be charitable year round, but the holidays are especially important. It is a time of giving and sharing. A salon could offer products at a 10 or  20 percent discount, making it clear that all proceeds are going to charity. Make a big sign that allows the salon to talk not just about the charity, but the product as well. It is a win-win and should be fun.

"Another great way is to show up at a park or a mall and offer $10 hair cuts. This is great for the community and for the salon. We don't always have to put in money, we can put in time instead. For example, the very first charity that I got involved in after forming Paul Mitchell was in downtown LA at the Union Mission. We still didn't have any money, but I went and helped them serve food to the homeless on Thanksgiving. From there I got involved with Animal Rights Group and it just took off from there. It's important for us to be beautiful inside too."
