Body, Spirit, Business: will you be a triple-threat Healthy Hairdresser in 2015? We’re here to help you set goals, meet them and maintain a healthy routine throughout this year.

When it comes to sticking to resolutions, research indicates what tends to work. First, keep your targets realistic—look at your lifestyle and time commitments, and make sure you’re setting attainable goals. Identify specific steps that will move you closer to attaining each goal. Tell the people close to you about your “self-care” project; that will help to keep you accountable. Better yet, get a friend to set goals, too, and report to each other weekly.

When you take two steps forward and one back—or even one step forward and two back!—forgive yourself and don’t throw in the towel. We all plateau and backslide; that’s part of the process. So keep your eye on the end game, even if it will take longer to achieve than you’d planned. Repeat affirmations to yourself that you are worth the effort. We can get you started with a few examples of setting a goal with steps that help you to work toward it.

Body Goal: Improve strength and posture.

1. Lift weights every other day to build arm muscles.

2. Jump rope every 3 days to build leg muscles.

3. Stand with my back against the wall for 3 minutes a day.

4. Ask another team member to alert me if my shoulders are slouching.

Spirit Goal: Reduce stress.

1. Sign up for a yoga class or start a group yoga session at the salon.

2. Go to bed a half-hour earlier than I do now.

3. Cut caffeine intake by half.

4. Count to 5 before responding in anger to someone.

Business Goal: Increase average client ticket by 20%.

1. Conduct a full consultation at every visit.

2. Turn 50% of my hair cut clients into cut-and-color clients.

3. Suggest services the client may not think of, such as deep-conditioning or a color shine.

4. Explain why I use every product I’m using, let the client hold the bottle and make sure the client knows the product is available for retail purchase.
