Q: How do I get great gray coverage?

A: "Every color line covers gray," says Arda Itez, Lakme USA National Director of Education. "It comes down to three things: formulation, application and timing. When you are formulating for a client with resistant gray hair (particularly with a cooler natural series) it’s vital to add a warm target shade. This doesn’t necessarily mean your end result will be warm, but you need to compensate for the missing underlying pigment in gray or white hair. You cannot get good gray coverage if you are taking half-inch sections or trying to stretch color by reducing the amount that you use. Resistant gray needs a thorough application with thin sections (no more than ¼ inch) and an appropriate amount of color on the brush. Finally, gray hair needs to process for a full 45 minutes for maximum deposition and longevity—that’s universal to all brands."
