How They Made It Big: Dean Banowetz

Born and raised on a farm in DeWitt, Iowa, Dean Banowetz is the 13th child of 15—which he credits with giving him a stong work ethic and teaching him how to share, “With 14 siblings, nothing is really ‘yours,’” he says. After high school, he joined the Active Duty Army where he was selected as soldier of the year—he says this experience developed his sense of discipline and drive. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he attended cosmetology school at Bill Hills College of Cosmetology in Iowa, where he discovered his true passion: professional hairdressing. Known as the Hollywood Hair Guy, Banowetz has styled hair for Extra, American Idol and is now the face and personality behind InStyler on QVC and InStyler Professional.
