What is a canvas cleanse? According to Deb Gavin, International Creative Director for Keratin Complex Color Therapy, this pre-service "It guarantees that the vibrancy and level of your desired color is reached."
To do the cleanse, Gavin mixes powder lightener (she uses "It's a Blonde Thing") with 10 volume developer and a few pumps of a clarifying shampoo (she uses "Keratin Complex Clarifying Shampoo) and a few pumps of a light conditioner (she uses "Keratin Complex Color Care Conditioner"). "The viscosity of this formula creates an easy application and sets you up for success."
Gavin applies this formula using a color board starting at the deepest areas and working through the existing tint. "The color board offers precision application and saturation," she says. "I also use fine sections and make sure the formula covers the old haircolor."
This service is best used when the color is browner or more opaque than the target color. "I use it on most new clients or when changing color," says Gavin. "I try to avoid bad color surprises."
