Recently, celebs like Jennifer Morrison, Behati Prinsloo and Iggy Azalea have taken things to another level when it comes to the standard ponytail. By adding some height, a few braids and a pony full of body, these stars have reminded us how fun and creative this age-old style can be. For ladies who love wearing their hair up or back, this style offers the perfect way to keep your hair off your face while still looking chic.
Here, Mario Russo, owner & lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston, offers us his tips on how to achieve this tri-look ponytail -- a different take on the standard pony!
GET THE LOOK:
STEP 1: On one side of the head create anywhere from 1-3 small braids, incorporating the hair along your client's scalp as you braid (similar to a French braid-style, you want the braids to be against the head). Secure each braid with a clear elastic to later be pulled into the pony.
STEP 2: Tease hair at the front of the head; then gather hair into pony with all of the braids in it and secure with a clear hair elastic.
STEP 3: Take a piece from under your client's ponytail, wrap around elastic and secure underneath pony with a bobby pin that matches the hair color.
STEP 4: Use a rat tail comb to loosen and pull up teased portion of hair that may have been flattened when you secured the ponytail.
STEP 5: Use Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray just on the ponytail to make it look fuller and more textured.
STEP 6: TFinish with Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray.
STEP 7: Don’t be afraid to get creative! Try different braid and twist variations until you feel the style is complete and chic!
