Melissa Maloney (@live_love_dohair), owner of Karma Salon & Spa, Liverpool, NY, specializes in balayage and “lived in” color. Her long-time client travels six hours to meet with Maloney for her special coloring magic. “She is only in town a few times a year,” Maloney says, “so we have to make sure she has a very low maintenance cut and color. Here hair is a natural level six with a pretty neutral tone.”
When her client arrived for this appointment, it had been several months since her last visit and more than one year since her last balayage. “This time she wanted to go slightly bolder but still natural and blended enough that she would have little maintenance.”
It took 3.5 hours for this particular makeover. Here Maloney shares the details and steps:
STEP 1: Balayage throughout using a mixture of Joico Freeplay and Redken Flash Lift blended with 20 volume (30 volume in the last section). “I painted mostly deep V's leaving large sections of depth in the back. I added in some heavy surface painted panels and took my points of interest very high in the front.” Apply using very heavy saturation and use balayage film between sections. “Painting her extra-long hair took about two hours.”
STEP 2: Process for 30 minutes then rinse and towel dry.
STEP 3: Tone using Redken Shades EQ 9V 9P and 9GI. Process for 20 minutes.
